A guide to exploring the majestic Sterkspruit Falls: The lesser known Drakensberg’s Crown Jewel
How to reach Tugela Falls
There are two primary routes to experience the majesty of Sterkspruit Falls you can trek to see the falls from above via the Monks Cowl Park entrance or you can visit the base of the falls via the Gorge Trail from Kukummi Lodge. Both offer incredible views and rewarding challenges, depending on your level of hiking experience.
1. The Monks Cowl Hike (Top of the Falls)
You have a choice of trails, that either meander through the valley, stop by the nearby Nandi Falls and then follow the Sterkpruit River down to the Sterkspruit falls before returning the Monks Cowl park entrance, or for something a little easier you can hike direct to the falls from the Monks Cowl Office.
What to Expect: The trail begins at Monks Cowl entrance and then you follow signs first to Nandi Falls and then to the Sterkspruit, taking in a majestic valley surrounded by high and sheer cliff faces. It is then a short 30 minutes walk back to the Gate where you started. Alternatively you can go direct to the falls following the signs from the gate, and then circle back the route you came. Be sure to look out beyond the falls into the valley and see if you can spot Kukummi Lodge nestled deep inside the gorge!
Highlights:
Walk through scenic landscapes with streams and rock pools.
Enjoy stunning views of the parks massive rock walls.
The final section involves rock-hopping and minor scrambling for added adventure.
2. The Sterkspruit Falls Gorge Trail (Bottom of the Falls)
For a more challenging hike with a lot of rock hopping and high chance of getting wet, The Sterkspruit Falls Gorge Trail is your go-to trail. This hike takes you through a stunning forest (be sure to strike a pose for our nature cams you pass on the way!) and several river crossings, until you reach the base of the falls. For added excitement, loop up past another majestic falls and up to view the Falls form the top as well. The entirety of this hike is inside the private Rood Nature Reserve, so be sure to contact our Lodge to get permission before taking on this trail (of course, guests can hike this as much as they like!).
What to Expect: The trailhead begins at Kukummi Lodge, located at the foot of the small gorge. The hike starts with a path through the forest before you reach a well trodden trail that takes you either left (to another falls and then a view from the top) or right to the base of the falls, and a shower of the finest spray in Summer time.
Highlights:
Crossing the river several times, hoping across rocks, pulling yourself up along banks with the aid of ropes and rails.
Experience breathtaking views from both the top and the bottom of the Falls.
Stand at the very base of Sterkspruit Falls (not too close!) for a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity.
Best Time to Visit Sterkspruit Falls
While the Sterkspruit Falls is a year-round destination, the best time to visit is during the summer months (November to March) when the waterfall is at its most impressive due to the rainy season. The winter months offer clearer skies and cooler temperatures, but the flow of the falls may be significantly reduced. If you’re hoping to see the Sterkspruit Falls at full force, summer is your best bet.
A Must-See Drakensberg Gem
Often languishing in the shadow of it’s smaller but much higher sister, the Tugela Falls, the Sterkspruit Falls is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the Drakensberg. Whether you’re looking to challenge yourself with the exhilarating summit hike or prefer a more relaxed day exploring the surrounding valley and forests, the natural beauty of this majestic waterfall is sure to leave you in awe.
