San Heritage
Our groundsman in Bushman’s Cave
Our valley is steeped in rich San heritage, providing a unique cultural backdrop for our guests. The San people, also known as Bushmen, were the original inhabitants of this region, and their presence has left an indelible mark on the landscape. The Rood Nature Reserve and the surrounding areas are renowned for their significant San rock art, which tells stories of their lives, beliefs, and the natural world they revered.
Our valley was a known area for San activity, including hunting and land management practices that were deeply in tune with nature. One of the notable features on our property is the locally known Bushman's Cave, which may have been a shelter for San hunters. The cave adds a layer of historical intrigue, suggesting the rich cultural tapestry woven by the San people in this area.
The ethos of Kukummi Lodge is deeply inspired by our San heritage. We strive to reflect the tones and spirit of the San culture in our development, including in the design of new rooms and the overall ambiance of our lodge. This connection to the past enriches the experience of our guests, offering a profound sense of place and history as they explore the natural beauty and cultural significance of our valley.
