Wake, Hike, Relax… Repeat: A Day at Kukummi Lodge
You wake to a cacophony of birds, animals, and the waterfall by your bedroom window. You take in your first breath of fresh mountain air, and over a hearty breakfast you get stuck into your dilemma of day: should you embark on one of our incredible hikes, explore the natural beauty and San heritage surrounding the Lodge, or take a day for rest and finding your inner peace?
Whether you're after a weekend escape or a week-long retreat, you can find the right balance with us here.
Let’s say you try to do it all in a day:
Mid-Morning: Exploring Nature and Local Wildlife
Keywords: nature walks to see wildlife at Kukummi Lodge, local flora and fauna
Take breakfast on the front lawn and keep an eye our for a Yellow-Billed Kite, a Crown Eagle, an African Grey Hawk, or even a Cape Vulture. The Drakensberg is one of the last strongholds of the Cape vulture, often spotted soaring high above the mountains.
After breakfast, take a leisurely stroll around the Lodge grounds. A short stroll past our stone circle, and along the dam wall and you can see Egyptian Geese, and other waterfowl. Head into the nearby forests and you can visit Moonie’s Pool, or trek further visit the Giant Yellowwood, Cannibal Cave and Cleo’s Pool. Alternatively you can just ‘be’ and forest bathe, connecting with the vibrations and energies of our indiegnous forests. On any walk you’ll encounter our neighbourhood Baboons - known for their playful nature, troops of chacma baboons can often be seen foraging along the rocky slopes of our valley. On longer treks into the national park you can even spot Eland: The largest antelope in Africa, often spotted grazing in the higher regions of the Drakensberg.
Bonus: If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a rare bird species or if you’re particularly brave, you can check out our Bushman’s Cave - a hidden spot only locals know about.
Lunch: Picnic by the River
Keywords: riverside picnics near the river on out lodge.
For lunch, why not pack a picnic and enjoy it by the banks of Mpofana/Sterkspruit River that winds through the middle of our Estate. This scenic place is a favorite for its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful surroundings, and there are plenty of shaded spots to relax, eat, and listen to the soothing sounds of the river.
Pro Tip: Keep your sandwiches hidden if the Baboons are about!
Evening: Sunset, Dinner and Stargazing
Enjoy the spectacular sunset as the sun drops behind the Dragons Back. Watch and hear the valley awaken for the evening - with Jackal howls, Bush Buck barks, and Owl calls.
Sit by our log fire with a glass of wine while we prepare a home cooked meal.
After dinner, sit around our fire pit, share kukummi, gaze at the stars, and enjoy the raucous silence of a valley alive with nature.
Fun Fact: The area around our nature reserve is known for its near zero light pollution, and with no houses between us and the mountain our Lodge is an amazing spot for stargazing. If its a cloudless night you’ll see the Milky Way or maybe a shooting star (be ready with your wish!)
