Discover Kukummi Lodge
A Hidden Eco-Boutique Retreat in the Drakensberg
Kukummi Lodge, a newly launched eco-boutique retreat, invites you to experience the untamed beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains. Tucked away in the exclusive Rood Nature Reserve, adjacent to the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg UNESCO World Heritage site, Kukummi Lodge offers a serene escape for those seeking sustainability and a deep connection with nature.
The lodge’s name, "Kukummi," meaning stories, myths, and news in the ancient San language, reflects its rich cultural heritage. With over 3,000 years of human presence in the valley, Kukummi Lodge is steeped in history, inviting guests to weave their own stories into this timeless landscape.
Kukummi Lodge, a sanctuary for nature lovers, is committed to preserving the pristine environment of this critical buffer zone. The founders, Ryan and Danny, bring a unique perspective to South African tourism, combining their experience in global cities with a passion for conservation. Ryan’s own San heritage fuels the lodge’s mission to protect and honour this cultural legacy.
As an LGBT+ and black-owned business in a traditionally conservative area, Kukummi Lodge proudly fosters an inclusive and diverse environment. Sustainability is at the heart of the lodge's operations, with efforts to reduce power usage, eliminate plastics, source locally, and restore the natural landscape by removing invasive species
